As the weather warms up you might be tempted or even told by a groomer to shave or clip down your Australian Shepherd to keep them cool, but we are here to sayโฆ..
Science has proven that double coated (breeds that have both rough coat or top coat and undercoat which is the soft and plushy fur) breeds should not ever be shaved down, (unless for a medical reason) but should be brushed to remove the dead undercoat.
The undercoat is important in keeping your Australian Shepherd warm in the winter AND cool in the summer. If shaved double coated breeds like the Australian Shepherd are unable to regulate their own temperature, leaving them susceptible to heat stroke, permanently damaged hair that cannot shed out on its own, and sunburn which can lead to skin cancer.
Instead reach out to a local groomer and express you strictly want a bath and an undercoat blow out. Brining printed pictures or showing on your phone of what type of grooming youโd like done leaves smaller margins for error!
If professional groomers arenโt available in your area here are some tools and links to them, to help you and your double coated breed!
